Great Barrier Reef

One of the main reasons one travels to Northern Queensland is to experience the Great Barrier Reef - the largest and most complex expanse of coral reefs in the world. We travel by catamaran to Green Island where snorkeling gear is provided, or, if you prefer, view the marine life from a glass bottom boat. We also cruise to one of the Outer Reefs to get a closer look at this incredible natural spectacle.

Here is a map, showing the location of Green Island, followed by a photo of the island itself!

The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space - which just tells you how big it is.  It is also experiencing some of the worst of global warming, in the death of corals, and bleaching.  You can see this in two of the photos, below.  What we will see and experience will show us both the wonders of this place and the challenges that face the world today.

If you want to read a bit more, here is an e-book you can look through to get ideas about the Reef and how to explore while you are there!
